Music is a universal language, and with the rise in technology, it has become the most powerful tool in the 21st century. Â In today's world, music is more accessible than ever with a vast array of options. Â We have digital downloads where you can listen to any song or album on your phone or computer for free, Amazon MP3 that gives you a chance to purchase what you want without having to download-and-upload it from your computer, and Spotify that lets you listen anywhere in the world for free! There are so many perks to this new culture of music and we all need these services now more than ever. Â We need to be mindful of how we use these because, if we do not, we risk having a bad impact on the music industry. Â While we can listen to music anywhere and at anytime with the use of technology and streaming services, we should be using it in a respectful way because there are many artists out there who depend on them for their income. When I was 16 years old, I became pretty obsessed with music. Â I bought CDs at BMG stores like Tower Records or Sam Goody (before they went out of business), and listened to them in my car when going to school or going places. Â I actually remember searching for new music, finding CD's of artists I had never heard of before, and ordering them online. I know today it is very common to listen to music on our phones now but, back then, my phone was not even an option. Â My family didn't have the money to afford a fancy smartphone or expensive smartphone plan. Â This is why I had to depend on technology like CDs or cassette tapes in order to listen to music. Â Those were the only options available at the time. Music piracy is one of the most prevalent forms of online theft today with many people accessing illegal sites that provide this service without any care for how it affects others or their careers. Â There are many artists who depend on their income coming from the sales of music. Â This means that stealing music can hurt these artists financially, which hurts them personally. Â We should be mindful of how we use technology to listen to music because it is easy to listen without paying for it. I remember becoming obsessed with listening to "American Idiot" by Green Day years ago, and I thought it would be cool if I could download this album legally. Â I didn't realize there were legal sites out there that allowed me to do so! Â I ended up downloading this album via the online store "Amazon MP3. Â This is why I believe that iTunes, Napster, and other online stores like this are perfect for people like me who want to listen to music legally. Â These sites allow you to purchase music for a cheap price or even listen for free if you have Prime. I think this technology itself is really cool because it allows you to listen to music not only on your phone, but also on your TV or stereo system. Â For example, I use the "Spotify" app on my iPhone and iPad so I can listen everywhere! Â Spotify used to be free but now they charge $10 per month or $3 per month if you have an advertisement-free version.
